As we celebrate the formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU) and the finalisation of the 7th administration, on Sunday we noted the appointment of 75 cabinet Ministers across 32 portfolios. I must commend President Cyril Ramaphosa for his ability to unite the nation through this 7th administration, truly exemplifying our democracy in action. 

The month of May, dubbed Energy month, brought on positive developments that are necessary for a sustainable and energy secure future. We saw the approval of Electricity Regulation Amendment (ERA) Bill by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), succeeding the adoption of Climate Change Bill – both playing a significant role in ensuring we steadily move towards a low-carbon future.

March has been another eventful month for SAWEA, our members, and the industry at large. The Association continues to make progress in our efforts to advance the wind energy sector and actively contribute toward the countries energy planning to include wind energy.  

As we settle in the year, on course to advocate the benefits of increased and accelerated wind energy deployment, to contribute towards the country's energy security, we are administratively preparing the Association in good governance to represent the industry for the best results.

2024 has started with multiple developments in the sector that require our urgent attention and swift action in positioning wind technology at the forefront of South Africa’s energy mix. This provides an opportunity to further strengthen our relationships with the Government and continue our advocacy efforts to support the rapid rollout of wind energy.  

As we near the end of the year, it's a perfect time to look back and celebrate some of the incredible milestones we've achieved as a sector in 2023.

This month's newsletter is particularly special as it paves the way for the much-anticipated Windaba 2023 conference and exhibition—an event that promises to be a milestone in our journey “Beyond the Turbines”. 

The last four weeks has seen the culmination of many months, and in some cases years, of hard work undertaken by our industry and Eskom, to strengthen policy and accelerate the country’s energy transition as we embark on a period of new power generation.
