Strengthening a Community Lifeline: Expanding Reach of Loeriesfontein Sopkombuis

In response to growing food insecurity, support for the community-led soup kitchen, the Sonskyn Sopkombuis, is helping to strengthen a critical safety net for vulnerable households in Loeriesfontein.

This intervention has enabled the soup kitchen to increase its reach, now serving approximately 250 people per week from the local sports hall. Meals include a balanced menu of protein and vegetables, contributing not only to improved food security but also to restoring dignity for those accessing the service.

“This support and partnership enable us to provide consistent, nutritious meals to vulnerable community members and their families. It has helped sustain our operations while restoring dignity and hope. We are now able to continue to make a meaningful impact where it is needed most,” said Marieta Kammies, Chairperson of Sonskyn Sopkombuis.

Established in 2022 as a grassroots response to rising need, the Sonskyn Sopkombuis began operating more consistently in October 2024, driven by local volunteers committed to ensuring that no one in the community goes without a meal. Initially able to serve between 50 and 70 people, the kitchen faced increasing pressure as demand grew, often having to turn people away when supplies ran out.

Following engagement with the soup kitchen board, the wind farms identified an urgent need to expand support. A structured partnership was introduced, focused on providing weekly raw food supplies during the last two weeks of each month — a period identified as particularly challenging for households once SASSA grants have been depleted.

“The initiative reflects the broader socio-economic challenges faced by many rural communities. Through continued collaboration, partnerships like this can play a meaningful role in responding to these realities in a practical and sustained way. We hope that our support will help to further extend the reach of this community soup kitchen,” said Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager for Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farm.

The Sonskyn Sopkombuis plays a vital role in supporting vulnerable residents, including the elderly, people living with disabilities, and households experiencing periods of financial strain.

“The sopkombuis has become a place where people know they will be received with care – and for many families, especially towards the end of the month, this support makes a real difference. It is more than just a meal — it brings relief and a sense that the community is looking out for one another,” concluded Fredericks.
