SAWEA Internship Powers Young Engineers' Career Journey

Grosjean Van Wyk, a young electrical engineer from the Bergsig community close to Springbok, is an example of how the right skills training can open doors and help build a successful career. Through a technical skills development internship programme funded by Kangnas Wind Farm, Grosjean has secured a permanent position as a Junior Electrical Technician at a local engineering firm.

Holding a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein, Grosjean entered the renewable energy space through the SAWEA Wind Industry Internship Programme (WIIP), an initiative designed to equip young graduates with practical skills and meaningful industry exposure.

Grosjean credits her mentor for providing both technical guidance and the encouragement needed to navigate a demanding, fast-paced environment.

“My mentor challenged me to solve problems, gave constructive feedback, and allowed me the space to learn from my mistakes. That balance helped me grow both professionally and personally,” she added.

In her role as a Junior Electrical Technician at BVI Consulting Engineers, Grosjean applies the skills and knowledge she gained through the internship programme, including translating theoretical concepts into practical solutions, developing essential technical competencies, building a strong professional network, and gaining a deep understanding of industry standards and practices. These foundations continue to support her growth and effectiveness in her current role.

“The transition from intern to full-time employee felt natural. The internship had already prepared me for the pressure and expectations. Personally, it was a moment of relief and validation, proof that all the hard work, late nights, and sacrifices were worth it,” she explained.

Looking ahead, Grosjean is focused on continued professional growth, with ambitions to register with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) within the next five years. Her current role continues to expose her to a diverse range of projects, both locally and internationally, further broadening her expertise in the renewable energy space.

Her message to aspiring interns: “Stay curious, be positive, and embrace challenges. Build a strong foundation, seek mentorship, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, that’s where real growth happens.”
