Local ECD Centres Receive Support to Address Food Challenges and Keep Children Learning

Early childhood development (ECD) centres in Noupoort are playing a critical role in supporting young children, but for many, the ability to provide daily meals remains an ongoing challenge.

In the Northern Cape, food insecurity continues to affect many households, placing added pressure on ECD centres that often serve as a vital source of nutrition for children. For some centres, rising costs and limited resources have made it difficult to consistently provide meals, directly impacting children’s wellbeing, attendance and ability to learn.

Recent challenges in the community saw one centre temporarily close its doors due to its inability to provide meals — highlighting the importance of sustained support to keep these facilities running.

In response, four local ECD centres have received targeted support aimed at addressing these immediate needs and stabilising their operations. The intervention included the provision of groceries, cooking supplies, gas, hygiene materials and educational resources to support both care and early learning.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude for the generous sponsorship of groceries and gas. This support means so much to us and has made a meaningful difference to our centre. It helps us continue providing quality care, nutrition and support to the children under our supervision,” said Chantell Booi, Principal at Chumani Day Care.

The support is helping to ensure that children, many of whom come from vulnerable households, have access to regular meals in a safe and structured environment. This not only supports their physical health, but also their ability to focus, participate and develop during these important early years.

“Nutrition plays a vital role in early childhood development. By providing consistent, nutritious meals at ECD centres, we are supporting children during their most critical developmental years,” said Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager supporting local programmes.

In total, 243 children and 16 adults across four centres — Azingce ECD Centre, Chumani ECD Centre, Vrolike Vinkies ECD Centre and Zingesani ECD Centre — have benefited from the latest support.

While this intervention responds to an immediate need, it forms part of broader, ongoing efforts to strengthen ECD in Noupoort. Over time, support has included improvements to infrastructure, access to learning materials and equipment, and training opportunities for practitioners — helping to build more resilient centres that can better serve the community.

“Through partnerships and collaboration with other independent power producers in the area, government stakeholders across various departments, and NGOs working in the education space, we continue to support and strengthen early childhood development in Noupoort,” Fredericks concluded.
