Exciting New STEM Programme Ignites Young Minds at Sipho Camugu High School
In a push to spark curiosity and passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects among Grade 9 learners, a transformative programme has been launched at Sipho Camagu High School. This initiative is part of the Golden Valley Wind Energy Facility’s broader economic development programme and focuses on encouraging learners to make informed subject choices as they prepare for their final years of high school.
The programme is set to inspire approximately 165 Grade 9 learners, offering them the tools they need to excel in English, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Accounting. By laying a strong academic foundation, this initiative aims to cultivate a new generation of STEM enthusiasts, ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow.
"We saw incredible results when we piloted this programme last year at Lonwabo High School and Sipho Camagu Secondary School," shared Zandile Deliwe, Social Performance Manager at Golden Valley Wind Energy Facility. "The enthusiasm and improvement at Sipho Camagu were particularly noteworthy, and we are confident that this programme will inspire even more learners to pursue Mathematics, Physical Science, and Accounting in Grade 10 and beyond. The ripple effect of this could be transformative for the entire school."
This programme offers more than just academic support. Grade 9 learners will benefit from career guidance and tailored exam preparation, setting them on a path to success in STEM subjects. Current Grade 10 students aren’t left behind—they will continue to receive dedicated support, including virtual Saturday classes, essential stationery, and exam preparation resources to help them shine in their studies.
Beyond the classroom, the programme equips teachers with tools, including laptops, data routers, and projectors, along with crucial resources like science kits and nutrition packs for learners. "We’ve witnessed a remarkable increase in learner engagement in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Accounting," said Tsilatsila Azwifaneli, Principal of Sipho Camagu High School. " The support from this programme has not only boosted academic performance but also strengthened parents’ confidence in their children’s future potential. This initiative is a game-changer for our school."
Teachers also receive invaluable professional development through lesson observations, co-facilitation, mini-workshops, and regular monitoring, ensuring that their teaching strategies are aligned with the highest educational standards.
This programme directly tackles local challenges, such as the historically low uptake of STEM subjects post-Grade 9 and the shortage of applicants for STEM-related bursaries. In the short term, the programme aims to significantly elevate academic performance in these critical subjects, while in the long term, it seeks to uplift the school’s overall academic standing and contribute to the broader community’s educational success.
By aligning subject choices with clear career paths, this programme not only offers learners a roadmap to their future careers but also equips them with the confidence and skills to navigate their educational journeys with clarity and purpose.
