Entrepreneur Day Fuels Local Economic Growth
This year's Witzenberg Entrepreneur Day, expanded into a two-day event to engage the broader Bella Vista and Nduli communities, demonstrated a strong commitment to local economic development. Driven by Perdekraal East Wind Farm, the event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders and local entrepreneurs to explore key topics such as compliance, funding opportunities, and sustainable business practices.
“As custodians of this event, we are immensely proud of the role it plays in fostering local economic development and supporting our entrepreneurs. This event has not only showcased the potential of our local businesses but also highlighted the strength of our partnerships with the community and the local municipality. We are grateful for the support from all stakeholders, whose contributions have made this event a platform for growth, collaboration, and sustainable business development,” said Gwynne-Lee Borcherds, Economic Development Manager for Perdekraal East Wind Farm.
A highlight of the event was hearing the success stories from two of the wind farm’s local SMME stimulation initiative beneficiaries. Ikamvaletu Tunnel Farming shared their inspiring journey of recovery and growth, made possible through the funding received from the wind farm. This funding enabled them to regain their commercial vegetable tunnel farming capacity, and they have since become the primary service provider for Perdekraal’s food garden project, contributing significantly to local food security.
“As an entrepreneur, attending the Entrepreneur Day opened up new business opportunities and avenues for growth. It provided an excellent platform for networking, marketing, and connecting with like-minded individuals, allowing me to establish my brand in ways that would otherwise be unaffordable for many small businesses. This event is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs and we hope it continues to be hosted annually,” expressed Andrew Aloni, Director of Ikamvaletu Tunnel Farming.
The Global Crime Prevention Unit (GCPU) also shared its success story, illustrating how the funding from the wind farm allowed them to expand their operations and secure new clients. Their partnership with Perdekraal East Wind Farm has not only enhanced their business credibility but has also led to the creation of new local jobs within the community.
The event, in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), Witzenberg Municipality, Old Mutual, the Western Cape Government's Departments of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, and Infrastructure, as well as the Ceres Business Initiative (CBI) and CASIDRA, provided a comprehensive platform for local entrepreneurs to engage on critical topics such as compliance and funding opportunities.
“Local economic development is a synergy between government, the private sector, community, and the public sector. Events like these are important as they create an enabling environment where businesses can thrive and grow,” said Riaan Fick, Local Economic Development Manager for the Witzenberg Municipality.
Furthermore, attendees and stakeholders were treated to a hearty lunch prepared by a local caterer, further emphasising the event’s focus on community involvement and support.
