Empowering Loeriesfontein Coaches Through Sports Coach Training
To meet the growing demand for quality sports coaching in Loeriesfontein, a comprehensive Sports Coaching Training Programme was recently implemented, bringing together local rugby, soccer, and netball teams. Driven by community collaboration and the passion of local sports clubs, this initiative contributes to the development of sports in the Namakwa District, with plans underway to establish formal leagues.
“In 2023, the Loeriesfontein sports community expressed the need for enhanced coaching support, which plays a vital role in sports education and social development. Sport fosters critical life values like respect, teamwork, diligence, and personal commitment. We are proud to support this programme, which equips local coaches with the tools to inspire and develop the next generation of athletes,” said Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager for Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms, the programme funders.
Implemented by Top in Sports, the programme aimed to equip Loeriesfontein coaches with the necessary tools to deliver high-quality training sessions, while bridging the gap in coaching expertise by providing a tailored curriculum that emphasises the practical aspects of sports coaching. The training encompassed modules such as Coach Development, Athlete Development, Sport Psychology, Injury Prevention and Management, Effective Communication, and Sport Club Development.
“Through our subsidiary, Tshiamelo Inclusive Education Center, we developed content that prioritises essential coaching skills, addressing the challenge coaches often face when implementing the overwhelming content from accredited courses. We also collaborated with local stakeholders, including the principals of Loeriesfontein Primary School and Loeriesfontein High School, to ensure alignment with school sports initiatives,” explained Klaas Jan Top, from Top in Sport.
As part of the programme's next steps, participating coaches will undergo first-aid training in early December, further strengthening their ability to support their teams. Additionally, coaches will also receive essential sports materials for their teams and branded clothing as a token of recognition for their dedication.
