Local High Schools Take Part in Leadership Development Programme for Personal and Community Development

In today's evolving world, fostering leadership skills in young learners is crucial for both personal and community growth. Recognising this need, learners and educators from Sipho Camagu High School and Johnson Nqonqoza High School recently participated in a transformative residential academy through the Columba Leadership Programme. Funded by Cookhouse Wind Farm, this initiative equips students with essential leadership values and skills, providing a unique opportunity for them to step away from their regular academic schedules and focus on personal development, teamwork, and problem-solving, all while fostering a sense of responsibility towards their community.

“The programme gives young people the opportunity to learn and sharpen essential 21st-century skills, such as leadership and problem-solving, that will be useful beyond the classroom. It also provides them with a safe space to explore their potential and build confidence, helping them realise their capacity to influence change as young leaders,” stated Siphe Mntonintshi, a Faculty Facilitator at the Academy.

The Residential Academy took place over several days, where 12 learners, two educators, and the school principal from each participating school, were guided through activities centred on six core values: awareness, focus, creativity, integrity, perseverance, and service. These sessions are designed to develop critical thinking, emotional intelligence, communication, and teamwork.

Mr. DF Barlow, Deputy Principal of Johnson Nqonqoza High School, commented, “Before my involvement with Columba, I was very strict with learners and had little sympathy for those who didn’t perform well academically. Through this programme, I’ve realised that while some learners may not excel academically, they have other talents and good attributes that can be nurtured. This programme has transformed how I relate to learners and colleagues, and I have noticed a significant positive shift in our school culture.”

Using an experiential learning approach, the academy challenges participants to explore innovative solutions to common issues faced by schools and communities. Upon completing the academy, learners graduate into a service-oriented phase where they implement social action projects addressing identified challenges. These projects not only benefit the school community but also equip learners with the tools to become active, positive contributors to society.

While still in its early stages, the Columba Leadership Programme has already fostered an environment where learners and educators view each other as co-creators of a brighter future. With plans for continued support over the next two years, the programme aims to integrate values-based leadership and positive youth engagement into the fabric of these schools, contributing to the long-term growth and development of both students and their communities.
