Bursary Programme Recipients Graduate

April 2024, Witzenberg Municipality, Western Cape

Two students from the Witzenberg area have recently celebrated completing their qualifications, a significant achievement supported by a local bursary programme dedicated to educational advancement. This initiative enables students from local high schools to pursue accredited bachelor's degrees at recognised universities, highlighting a commitment to empowering youth and fostering community development within the region.

Zanele Mqukumba, one of the graduates who studied Social Work at the University of the Western Cape expressed, "My journey as a student was enlightening and challenging, but the bursary assisted me with monthly data allowance and monthly mentor sessions, keeping me on track with my personal and academic goals." Zanele plans to continue her studies pursuing a Master's degree.

With a focus on enabling learners from local high schools to pursue accredited bachelor's degrees at recognised universities, this initiative not only supports the educational aspirations of students but also contributes to the community development of the region. The scholarship criteria prioritise inclusivity and equity, with a particular emphasis on students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds within the Witzenberg area.

"We saw the potential that students in the beneficiary communities had in their academic performance and seized the chance to invest in a better future for these students. Through bursaries, our youth gain access to the resources they need to pursue high-quality education, thereby securing a brighter future," stated Gwynne-Lee Borcherds, Economic Development Manager for Perdekraal East Wind Farm, the programme funders.

Shanidine Bezuidenhoudt reflected on her journey, stating, "My journey has been very hectic, but looking back, I realise that it was all worth it. The bursary allowed me to be less of a financial burden to my parents, which I was very grateful for." She is currently enrolled in a Postgraduate Certificate in Education course, aspiring to make a difference as a teacher.

In addition to financial support for tuition, the wind farm provided the recipients with textbooks, data, accommodation, stationery, and mentorship sessions, ensuring holistic support throughout their academic journey.

The bursary programme continues to be a catalyst for change, empowering youth from underprivileged backgrounds to pursue higher education and realise their full potential. Applications for the 2025 bursary programme will open towards the end of the year, furthering wind farm’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a brighter future for the community.
