Remembering Chris Van Rooyen

We are saddened by the passing of Chris van Rooyen, a valuable member of SAWEA’s Environmental Working Group. Chris was a well-renowned bird and wildlife photographer, as well as an avifaunal specialist. Chris was an extraordinary individual who dedicated his life to unlocking the secrets of nature and promoting sustainable development in the South African renewable energy field. Alongside his close friend and business partner Albert Froneman, Chris made significant contributions to avifauna conservation and renewable energy projects throughout Southern Africa. Their journey began in 1998 when they both joined the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), where their shared vision brought them together. Recognising the importance of balancing renewable energy development with the protection of avian species, they established an avifaunal consulting and bird photography tour company in 2007. Through this venture, they embarked on numerous projects across Africa that aimed to harmonise environmental preservation and sustainable energy practices. Chris's expertise as an avifaunal specialist was matched by his artistic talent as an award-winning bird photographer. His captivating images graced the pages of various publications, delighting audiences with the beauty of avian wildlife. Additionally, his artistic skills extended to his artwork of raptors, which were featured in the renowned Roberts 7 publication. He twice reached the finals of the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition and clinched birdphotographers.net’s ‘Image of the Year’ award in 2008 in the “Behaviour: All other animals” category.

Despite his accomplishments, Chris remained humble and always acknowledged the collaborative efforts of his teams and fellow researchers. He fostered a sense of community and inspired a new generation of conservationists who continue to build upon his legacy. Chris firmly believed in the power of unity and collective action, recognising that the challenges we face can only be overcome together. Albert expresses deep gratitude for the privilege of knowing Chris for such a significant period and cherishes their friendship and partnership. Together, they built a leading avifaunal consulting firm, supported by a talented team of individuals. Albert intends for the company to continue to serve the industry, honouring Chris’ invaluable legacy.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family, who stood as his foundation of strength. His wife, Izelle and his two sons, Stefan and Tiaan, were his bedrock of support but also a source of inspiration for his unwavering commitment to avian conservation. May they find solace in the knowledge that Chris' legacy will forever shine brightly. Chris, may your spirit forever soar among the birds you loved, and may your legacy serve as a guiding light for future generations. Your unwavering dedication and the impact you made in managing the delicate balance between renewable energy development and the protection of avian species has left an indelible imprint on the industry.
