Enel’s renewable arm, Enel Green Power, and QIA have joined forces to conclude, through Enel Green Power RSA, three Power Purchase Agreements with Air Liquide Large Industries South Africa and Sasol South Africa for the long-term supply of a total capacity of 330 MW of renewable energy.
This makes Enel Green Power RSA one of the first renewable energy companies to conclude a set of large-scale wind PPAs in South Africa for the Commercial and Industrial market.
Johannesburg, February 26th, 2024 – Enel Green Power, the Enel Group subsidiary dedicated to the development and management of renewable energy plants worldwide, and Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), through their jointly controlled entity, Enel Green Power RSA (EGP RSA), have concluded three long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Air Liquide Large Industries South Africa (Air Liquide) and Sasol South Africa (Sasol) to supply 330 MW of renewable energy to Sasol’s Secunda site, where Air Liquide operates the world’s largest oxygen production facility.
This makes Enel Green Power RSA one of the first renewable energy companies to conclude a set of large-scale wind PPAs in South Africa for the Commercial and Industrial (C&I) market. The power will be generated by three joint venture (JV)-owned wind projects located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa and are expected to be operational by 2026. This 330 MW cluster complements the existing platform of over 730MW already in operation and is expected to result in an annual production of more than 1,100 GWh.
The announcement also marks the first project developed entirely under the umbrella of the JV between Enel Green Power and QIA since the two entities entered into a partnership to build and operate renewable energy plants in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The partnership is aligned with QIA’s commitment to support the global transition to a low-carbon future, and strengthens Enel Green Power as a major renewable energy supplier in South Africa as it continues discussions with other off-takers to increase energy capacity, a move that will further consolidate its position as a leader in the renewable energy industry.
