Business Description: Cennergi (Pty) Ltd is a diversified independent power producer. Based in Southern Africa, it focuses on the ownership, operation and maintenance of renewable energy projects, together with the asset management of its own projects and those of others.
The company has offices in Pretoria, Gauteng, and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Eastern Cape. The company’s presence in the Eastern Cape allows it to be close to core operations there. On 1 April 2020, Cennergi became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Exxaro Resources Limited. Exxaro’s asset portfolio includes coal operations, investments in iron ore, residual pigment manufacturing, and renewable energy. Mxolisi Mgojo, CEO of Exxaro, had this to say about the acquisition: “Building climate change business resilience is an opportunity to diversify our business portfolio into a low-carbon product mix. This will give us access to renewable energy, which will drive our strategy to become carbon neutral. We will continue to invest in the development of low-carbon energy, to ensure that the majority of the population has access to affordable and reliable sources of energy.” Cennergi established itself in the local renewable energy sector in 2012, and was awarded bids for two wind farm projects in the Eastern Cape, by participating in the Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer’s Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
