Springbok Youth Empowered Through Renewable Energy Internship

Tyreeq Engelbrecht, from Springbok, is making strides in the renewable energy sector through an internship at Kangnas Wind Farm. This opportunity is part of a broader initiative to develop skills, essential for the growing renewable energy industry and national economic advancement, whilst developing local youth.

Tyreeq, a standout from the wind farm’s Beyond Matric programme, is now gaining invaluable experience under the guidance of Plant Manager Brenda Sidaki, focusing on various operational aspects of wind farm management. This internship aligns with the Wind Industry Internship Programme (WIIP), a collaboration between the South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) and the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA), aimed at equipping recent graduates with practical experience in sustainable energy solutions.

“This initiative allows interns to network with experienced people and sharpen their skills before entering the workforce. It also helps these young people find their passion, gain industry experience, and boost their resumes. As the wind energy sector grows, more opportunities will arise, requiring prepared and qualified young professionals,” stated Rouchet Daniels, Economic Development Manager for Kangnas Wind Farm.

As an Operations Plant Intern, Tyreeq, who is an intern at the wind farm,  will undertake various responsibilities, including Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) management; Technical Performance Monitoring; Finance, Contracts, and Governance tasks; as well as Administration duties.

“The highlight of the training was the focus on leadership skills, which inspired me to take control of my future. With the support from the plant manager and team, I hope to excel in my objectives and to finally complete my workplace modules that will enable me to earn my red seal certificate and diploma in electrical engineering. Looking ahead, I'm eager to pursue a career in renewable energy,” expressed Tyreeq.
