The company is actively developing over 50000 MW of wind and solar projects across South Africa. Mainstream SA was formed in 2009 when Genesis Eco-Energy, a local SA developer who has been developing projects and promoting renewable energy in SA since 2002 formed a joint venture with Mainstream Renewable Power based in Dublin. Mainstream Renewable Power is a leading global renewable energy developer with a total portfolio of 15 000 MW of wind and solar projects across 8 countries.
In December 2011, a consortium led by Mainstream SA was awarded preferred bidder status by the Dept of Energy to deliver 138 MW of wind energy and 100 MW of solar PV into commercial operation by 2014.
