Khobab Wind Farm achieved its Commercial Operations Date on schedule and on budget, as part of the third round of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme. Khobab Wind Farm received support from the local municipality and surrounding communities during the construction phase and into operations. A number of economic development projects, aimed at contributing to sustainable community growth through financial and non-financial community development involvement. During the operations, a monetary commitment has been made to specifically developing enterprises and improving the socio-economic welfare of the community for 20 years.
Situated in the Hantam Municipal Area, 60km north of Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape, Khobab Wind Farm spans 3,453 hectares of agricultural land and comprises sixty-one 99m-high wind turbines. The site was chosen because of its excellent wind resource, its proximity to national roads for wind turbine transportation, the favourable construction conditions, municipality and local stakeholder support, the straightforward electrical connection into the Eskom grid, and studies showed that there would be little environmental impact.
When operating at full capacity, the 140MW Khobab Wind Farm generates around 563,500 MWh/year of clean renewable energy per year and is expected to supply electricity to power up to 120 000 South African homes.
Khobab Wind Farm eliminates approximately 550,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year when compared to traditional fossil fuel power plants. In addition to zero carbon emissions and reduced use of fossil fuels, the country will benefit from minimal water consumption during the generation process and significant social and enterprise development programmes.

Noupoort Wind Farm has achieved its Commercial Operations Date (COD) on schedule and on budget, making it the first wind farm to successfully achieve operation as part of the third round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.
Noupoort Wind Farm has received resounding support from the local municipality and the surrounding communities throughout the construction phase and into operations. A number of economic development projects, which include Capacity Building for existing and prospective entrepreneurs; and local maths and science development programmes that incorporate science and computer labs as well as local Wi-Fi infrastructure are being implemented.
Situated in the Umsobomvu Municipal Area, 10km east of Noupoort in the Northern Cape, Noupoort Wind Farm spans 7500 hectares and comprises thirty five 99m-high wind turbines. The site was chosen because of its excellent wind resource, its proximity to national roads for wind turbine transportation, the favourable construction conditions, municipality and local stakeholder support, the straightforward electrical connection into the Eskom grid, and studies showed that there would be little environmental impact.
When operating at full capacity, the 80MW Noupoort Wind Farm generates around 304 800MWh of clean renewable energy per year and is expected to supply electricity to power up to 69 000 South African homes.
Noupoort Wind Farm eliminates approximately 300 000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year when compared to traditional fossil fuel power plants. In addition to zero carbon emissions and reduced use of fossil fuels, the country will benefit from minimal water consumption during the generation process and significant social and enterprise development programmes.

Situated within the Witzenberg Local Municipality, in the Western Cape, Perdekraal East Wind Farm is less than two hours from Cape Town.
The wind farm spans an area of 3055 hectares and was chosen because of its excellent wind resource and its proximity to national roads for wind turbine transportation.
The site offers favourable construction conditions, municipality and local stakeholder support, the straightforward electrical connection into the Eskom grid, and studies showed that there would be little environmental impact.
Once complete, the 110MW Perdekraal Wind Farm will comprise forty-eight, 115m-high wind turbines.
When operating at full capacity, Perdekraal East Wind Farm will generate around 368.8 GWh/year of clean renewable energy per year and is expected to supply electricity to power up to 95 000 South African homes.
Perdekraal East Wind Farm will eliminate approximately 410,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year compared to traditional fossil fuel power plants. In addition to zero carbon emissions and reduced use of fossil fuels, the country will benefit from minimal water consumption during the generation process and significant social and enterprise development programmes.
Mainstream Asset Management South Africa will manage the Operations of Perdekraal Wind Farm.
The debt for the projects has been arranged and led by ABSA.
Concor and Conco Consortium have been appointed as construction contractors and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy will supply and install the wind turbines. Simmons & Simmons and White & Case acted as Lenders’ Legal Advisor. Fasken and Stoel Rives acted as Sponsor Legal Counsel.

Kangnas Wind Farm, situated outside of Springbok, in the Northern Cape’s Nama Khoi Municipal area, commenced construction during June 2018. The wind farm will deliver 140MW’s of clean renewable power from its sixty-one wind turbines during operations.
Not only will this project be beneficial in addressing the ongoing and increasing need for clean electricity in South Africa, it will also positively impact the country’s economy and people, with a particular focus on communities within a 50km radius of the wind farm.
Kangnas Wind Farm boasts excellent wind resource and is ideally located close to the N7 (national road), which assists with delivery during the extensive wind turbine transportation programme. The site has favourable construction conditions and has straightforward electrical connections into the Eskom grid. In addition to this, the 12-month environmental studies indicated that there would be little environmental impact.
Kangnas Wind Farm will generate around 563 500 MWh/year of clean renewable energy per year, once operational. This is enough clean, green electricity to power up to 120 000 South African homes.
Kangnas Wind Farm will eliminate approximately 550,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year when compared to traditional fossil fuel power plants. In addition to zero carbon emissions and reduced use of fossil fuels, the country will benefit from almost zero water consumption that is required during the generation process.
Mainstream Asset Management South Africa will manage the Operations of Kangnas Wind Farm.
