CEO VOICE – SEPTEMBER 2022

CEO VOICE – SEPTEMBER 2022

Dear Members

We are just days away from Windaba 2022’s kick-off, which promises to be an outstanding conference, thanks to our members and broader industry’s continued support and involvement.  At the same time the EnergyDrive’s Cape Route will be launched, once again made possible by the many wind farms across the three provinces, which are funding this much-loved edu-vehicle.

We also recently celebrated the signing of the first three BW5 projects, all of which are wind energy projects. This is in addition to the recent announcement that the capacity included for wind energy in BW6 has increased from 1600MWs to 3200MWs.

Amidst all this excitement, our country’s energy crisis continues to critically impact us all, leaving a deep wound on the economy.  We believe that the President’s plan to address the crisis is on the right track, hinged on improving Eskom’s fleet performance and accelerating new generation capacity through renewable energy.

Whilst the problem is simple, developing solutions for the energy crises is complex and requires the right expertise for planning.  For this reason, we have supported the amendments to the ERA and ERA schedule 2, which will help to liberalise the energy market and increase generation.

Kind regards,
Niveshen Govender
CEO, South African Wind Energy Association
