KIPETO BIODIVERSITY PROGRAMME MAKES GOOD PROGRESS

Kajiado County, Kenya

Kipeto Wind energy project, (Kipeto), is the first wind farm in Kenya attempting to offset potential impacts on birds through a unique biodiversity action plan. The plan includes both industry-leading on-site mitigation measures, including observer-led shut-down-on-demand (SDOD) of turbines; and off-site raptor conservation programmes implemented through conservation partners, focussed primarily on anti-poisoning community awareness-raising and interventions to decrease human-wildlife conflict.

LOERIESFONTEIN HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING

Following discussions with the provincial and district Department of Education and the School Governing Body, Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms funded the refurbishment of key aspects of the Loeriesfontein High School infrastructure. This project not only made the school a safer and more conducive place to learn but it also provided jobs for local community members.

BIODIVERSITY PROGRAMME DELIVERS LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FOR COMMUNITY

LOCAL YOUTH BENEFIT FROM TRAINING PROGRAMME

Levandre Loots, based in the rural Eastern Cape community of Cookhouse, is one of the eight young graduates who have benefitted from a Wind Turbine Service Training programme, as part of a youth development technical training initiative. During the seven-month long course, the youth were trained under the stewardship of the South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC), through the Cookhouse Wind Farm funded programme, aimed at upskilling youth.

BURSARY RECIPIENT WITH A PASSION FOR HER COMMUNITY

Bursary recipient, Chrismarelle De Hart (40), is currently in her second year of a Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase, which she hopes to complete in 2025. Her dedication to her studies extends beyond her goal to improve her own life, but to helping others in her community of Humansdorp as well.

BUILDING TECHNICAL SKILLS FOR SOUTH AFRICA’S WIND POWER SECTOR

The Wind Turbine Service Training programme, an initiative of EIMS Africa’s Portfolio Company, Cookhouse Wind Farm, and Suzlon, its Operations and Maintenance Contractor, is helping to build technical skills for South Africa’s wind power sector.  This skills based capacity building programme demonstrates both sector leadership as well as the value of collaboration.  Furthermore, the programme addresses localised youth unemployment.

ANOTHER THREE LOERIESFONTEIN STUDENTS AWARDED BURSARIES

Three students from Loeriesfontein have been awarded scholarships that will help them in furthering their studies. They form part of a group of 12 students in Loeriesfontein already receiving funding as part of the Khobab Wind Farm Bursary Programme, which allows Loeriesfontein community members, but particularly youth to pursue higher education and follow their dreams.

EUREKA INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL RECEIVES FUNDING FOR EDUCATOR ASSISTANTS

Having identified the need for educator assistants a few years ago, Eureka Intermediate School applied to the Department of Education to fund these posts. But when funding ran short, Noupoort Wind Farm was able to step in to take over the funding of three educator assistants, which commenced in August 2021 and will continue for the remainder of this year.READ MORE

JEFFREYS BAY WIND FARM WELCOMES FIRST EVER HSE INTERN TO THEIR TEAM

More than 70 young students have taken the leap from completing their studies to kicking off their careers through the national Globeleq South Africa’s internship programme, since its inception seven years ago.  One of the latest beneficiaries of this programme, which was created to develop young technical staff for a renewable energy industry, is Naledi Shai, who has joined Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm as the project’s first HSE intern.
