The Roadmap for Eskom 2019 and its impact on the IPP industry

ON TUESDAY 29 October 2019, the South African Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, released, and held a media briefing on, a special paper entitled “Roadmap for Eskom in a Reformed Electricity Supply Industry, 2019” (the Roadmap). The Roadmap highlights the issues that Eskom is currently facing and then sets out the government’s plan to address them.  Eskom is currently vertically integrated.  The aim is for Eskom’s transmission business to be fully functionally separated into a newly formed subsidiary of Eskom Holdings SOC Limited by 31 December 2021 and for the legal separation of the utility into three companies – generation, transmission and distribution – by 30 December 2022. Webber Wentzel set out below a summary of the Roadmap and their thoughts on some key takeaways flowing therefrom for independent power producers (IPPs), lenders and other stakeholders.READ MORE

Enel breaks ground on R6.4bn wind farms

Italian multinational energy company Enel, through its renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power RSA (EGP RSA), this morning announced it has started construction in SA of its R6.4 billion Karusa and Soetwater wind farms, with an installed capacity of 140MW each.READ MORE

YOUNG MINDS, CLEAN ENERGY, BRIGHTER FUTURES

Two of the country’s largest wind farms currently under construction have launched a secondary school awareness programme, aimed at exposing learners to the basics of renewable energy.  The programme targets thousands of high school learners to not only provide information about producing clean power, but also to let the youth know about the opportunities available to them, relating to careers inherent in harnessing wind energy.READ MORE
